The Farm and Animals

We are a working farm mainly producing hay & haylage, for the horse market, this is produced on our land and neighbouring farms. We keep some animals, but our land is more suited to hay production. Our recent addition of Alpaca seemed suited to the grassland.

Shetland Sheep

We keep these mainly to help graze down rough areas of the farm and help keep good rotation with the horses, and Alpaca's

Alpaca's

These are the latest additions to Longthorns and hopefully this is the direction of the farm. The land is ideal for Alpaca as it very similiar to their native grasslands.

We have already begun a breeding programme, with Cria's (baby Alpaca) due from June onwards this year. This willbe for fibre production , so in time socks, garments will be available

The boys will used for Alpaca trekking maiily useing our own Woodland walk and picnic area in one of our quiet fields. This will available to book nearer the summer

Horses

At present we have Twiglet who has evented to novice level. Since then she has had one foal. Miss Fidget, (Picture) andis now in foal again to the same stallion, her due date is may 2011.

We have Casper staying with us at the moment to keep Twiglet company as sadly we lost Spoon our old grey horse in 2011

Dogs

We have two dogs. both rescue

Reims a 3 working springer Spaniel, the ususal manic attitude to life !!

Byrd a 10 year old ridgeless Ridge back , she has been known in the early days to help her self to a string of sausages waiting to be BBQeeed!!

Chickens

Chickens are always to be found at Longthorns, we in time will aquire more chickens, but at present fox's are a really issue, which is primarily how we became interested in Alpaca's as they are extremly good at guarding against fox's
